What are exit polls?

Exit polls are preliminary surveys of voters, conducted immediately after polling to know the pulse of the constituency. Though inaccurate, exit polls help the public gauge which party is leading in the polls and is likely to come to power. The reliability of exit polls is affected by several factors, including voter honesty with answers, margin of error, and sample size. While exit polls help measure judgement, it must be mentioned that they are not always accurate.

According to the Representation of the People Act, 1951 (Section 126A), exit polls cannot be conducted or publicised until voting is over. This regulation ensures that exit polls do not influence voters’ decisions during the voting process.

As per Election Commission guidelines, media outlets are allowed to publish or broadcast exit poll results only after all phases of polling in a state have concluded. Since Delhi had a single-phase election, exit polls are expected to be released soon after polling ends today.
